                                                                                                        ⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Shurelia aka Eolia
Age: 740, though she sure doesn't look it!
Canon: Ar Tonelico
Canon Point: After the events of the first two games have passed.

Background:

http://artonelico.wikia.com/wiki/Shurelia

As one of if not the most important character in the series lore, to say there is a lot of background info about her is a bit of an understatement. Because of this, I am both including a wiki link AND a bit of info typed out the old fashioned way that the link doesn't include. Her background was retroactively expanded upon in the most recent game set in this universe, and the content is not mentioned in the link. Though she did not appear until late in the game, and despite her inclusion being mostly  an extended cameo and nostalgia trip for series fans, its still a part of her life so I thought deserved at least a few lines.

These events happen extremely early in her life, in a time where she was still effectively a child, and thus long before anything mentioned in the above link. Her role in Ar noSurge revolves around people from another world suddenly appearing before her. Searching for a way to save the people of a planet that had already been destroyed, they found themselves on Shurelia's world of Ar Ciel. Originally hoping to migrate to Ar Ciel, they are told by the planet's very soul that it would be bad both for them and the planet's current residents. Instead they are offered something more useful, knowledge of how to actually create a planet of their own. When they return to share this knowledge with the people they left behind, Shurelia's curiosity gets the better of her and she follows them home. While it was not long before she returned to her own world for good, this brief moment of total freedom stuck with her as she grew older. She never forgot what it was like to just do what SHE wanted.

Personality:

To most of the people of the world she is from, Shurelia would seem to be a level-headed, reliable, confident and fair leader. Stern without being cruel, she seems to be a model leader, never thinking of herself and always looking at the bigger picture. People see her as some sort of untouchable paragon, and the protagonist of the game describes her as the person he admires most. She is unafraid to throw herself into battle to protect the people that depend on her, and anytime the city of Platina, where she lives, found itself in danger she was always there to defend it. She comes across as level-headed, always trying to make the choices that were most likely to lead to a positive outcome with the minimal amount of loss. A fine example of just how far she will go is given in the game a bit over halfway through, where she seemingly sacrifices her life to keep the world safe. While she was later awakened, she had no way to know that would happen, and was willing to give up her own existence to keep the people who depended on her safe.

She is, of course, much more then this. Very few people have known Shurelia as anything else then an authority figure in her 700+ years of life, but she is no mindless doll. While she is a capable leader, she does it out of a sense of necessity and doesn't particular enjoy it. She makes decisions that seem 'level-headed' because when she is in a position of leadership (which, in her world, is pretty much constantly) she has trained herself to ignore her emotions. As the original reyvateil that all others created was based upon, her knowledge of the sciences of her world was extensive, and she shared it with humanity, convinced they would use it to better themselves. Instead she watched more of her kind created as weapons of war as selfish humans used reyvateils as living weapons, every last one of them a 'child' of hers on some level. It should go without saying that seeing the knowledge she shared used to wage war affected her deeply.

Those feelings of betrayal only deepened when human scientists, using methods she herself had taught them, created the reyvateil known as 'Mir', a supposedly emotionless shell intended to replace her as the administrator of an important facility known as the Silver Horn, a place that regulated magical power. Things did not go as planned however, as the emotionless doll they created didn't remain emotionless, deciding that humanity didn't deserve to survive. In the war that ensued, Shurelia was betrayed by humanity once again when they tried to strip her of HER emotions to force her to defend them.

While she was never stripped of her emotions, actually being saved by her 'enemy' who didn't want to see the same thing done to anyone else, these numerous betrayals and the heartache they brought her had a very large influence on how she handled herself in the future. As she stepped back into a position leadership over the people, she did so with the mindset she would carry for hundreds of years, to allow logic rather then emotions to govern the choices she made. As a leader, she become the stern, seemingly emotionally cold woman she would be known as for centuries to come.

But as previously stated, very few people know the true Shurelia. When her position isn't dictating her actions, when she makes choices based on what she WANTS rather then what needs to be done, she's quite different, to the point it might seem like she actually has two personalities. This isn't the case, however. Despite all her hardships, despite her attempt to be the perfect leader for the people of the tower, she is no mindless robot. Once a person gets past her shell, they will find a person who is a great deal more human.. They find a person who is not some sort of unthinking robot who exists just to protect others, they find a woman who desperately craves some normalcy in her life, and is envious of those who are allowed to live socially. While she does not hate how her role as tower administrator in even the slightest, she also wants to just be a person, something which would just be unheard of for the 'great and mighty' Lady Shurelia.

The real woman, the one beneath the shell of the 'perfect leader', is no different from anyone else. Without her position as a leader to force her to act a certain way, she is surprisingly somewhat shy. Having spent so long acting a certain way makes it difficult for her to express herself. As an example, in the earlier parts of the game she is constantly wearing a battle armor that covers nearly her entire body, but when she is playable removes it. While talking with the protagonist, she expresses how different the world feels to her when she is experience it entirely with her own senses and, once encouraged that anyone who saw her without the armor would just think she was a cute girl, she claims that being told that so suddenly was frightening despite it actually being flattering.

In reality she's pretty far from perfect. For instance, she is somewhat clumsy. Without the aid of her combat armor she has been known to trip over her own feet. She also has absolutely no sense of direction, able to get lost within the place she is supposed to be the undisputed administrator of. She's admitted that at least some of her free time is spent playing games with one of her assistants, a robot by the name of Meimei, and her guardian, a creature named Elma. She has a love for rabbits and things in their image, to the point where she is accused of being a 'bunny freak' by the protagonist. She is a surprisingly decent cook as well, though she's rarely had an occasion to show it. She frequently lies about her age, though oddly she will occasionally claim to be older then she actually is. She refers to an event in her past as happening 'when my age was still measured in three digits' which, while technically not a lie, implies that her current age was not also measurable that way. They are all little quirks that add up to make a woman who is not nearly as emotionless and robotic as her leader persona would make it seem.

Overall, she's a woman who, despite being much older then she looks, is not that much different from the people around her. Serious to a fault when the situation requires it, when they do not she is a warm, caring person who wants nothing more then to be just that. She will probably take well to a world that doesn't require her to sacrifice her freedoms for the sake of others, though she'll always be ready to step forward and help others when needed.

Abilities:

Shurelia is a reyvateil, an artificially created lifeform capable of harnessing the power of their emotions into song-based magic. While in the canon this is done by tapping into the power of the towers the games are set in, it is not difficult to imagine them working similarly in a world that gives power to emotions. While not the strongest practitioner of song magic in her world, it would be a single digit number if one were to count reyvateils that were on her level The following link provides the basics of what she can do with song magic. Two of the spells 'Silver Horn' and 'Ar Tonelico' won't be coming with her, as they specifically take power from certain parts of the tower, which of course only exists in her home world. Plus without video game logic behind it, Ar Tonelico would pretty much just destroy huge areas every time she used it.

http://artonelico.wikia.com/wiki/Shurelia:_Song_Magic

She also possesses a special piece of equipment known as the Linkage Armor, though its primary function of enhancing her connection to the tower would be useless outside her home world. It is still capable of enhancing her mobility due to the fact it actually hovers slightly over the ground, but other then that (it is not true flight, she won't be zooming around with it) and providing bodily protection, it has no functions that would be relevant outside her world.

Alignment:

I am choosing to align her to Piphron. Her trust in humanity literally changed the course of her world's history. The knowledge she shared to allow humanity to create more reyaveteils  was effectively responsible for most major events in her world's history. When that trust was first broken, it affected her so deeply that it caused a major shift in her personality. Yet even after she became so cautious, she never really gave up on people. Trusting in others comes naturally to her.

Other: The game has divergent paths which affect the story a bit. Though it will likely never come up in character, if it does she is Shurelia from the Misha story path, as it is the one I am most familiar with.

                                                                                                                  ⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

General Sample:

[The need for money was something rather new for Shurelia. If there was one thing her position of importance had never prepared her for, it was the need to pay rent. Everything had always been provided for her, no questions asked. Yet she was no self-important prima donna . She was fully prepared to work just like anyone else did. Unfortunately for her she was a bit lacking in marketable skills. But most everyone had emotions. While the idea of somehow fusing emotions into cosmetic products was a bit strange to her, if someone was willing to pay her to try, she was willing to humor them. What she had NOT expected was to be surrounded in puppies!]

Oh...these little animals are really cute. They aren't as cute as bunnies, but they have their own unique charm.

[She seems to find them more charming then she was letting on, however. She hadn't even realized that she had a partner she was supposed to be working with in the room with her. She holds one of the little fluffy puppies up to her face in one hand, its little legs waggling as if was going trying to walk in place. A wide smile touches Shurelia's face when it starts to lap at her face. You can't QUITE see little hearts floating off of her, but it wouldn't be too surprising if you could.]

I think I like these 'puppies'. I will put you in my top 5 cute animals. I....o..ooh. It would seem I forgot something.

[She's only now remembering she's supposed to be working with someone., she looks upwards at her partner, a mildly embarrassed look on her face. On the bright side, unlimited access to the puppy room has allowed her to do a good portion of the work all on her own, and entirely by accident!]

Emotion Sample:

[When she left her home earlier in the day, she hadn't expected to end up singing in public. But now, in a small, secluded parkm she had a pair of young eyes locked on her, a vibrant smile on the face of their owner. It had been coincidence she'd stumbled across the child, sulking in the park because her parents had been forced to cancel plans in order to work. The signs of the child's sorrow had been obvious. The park had been unnaturally cold, so cold that if she had not seen the child sitting in the middle, looking downcast, she would have just left. But she could hardly abandon a child like that, and after discovering it was loneliness that had her so down decided to stay with her for awhile.

It was awkward at first, but she finally succeeded in warming up the child's heart with a song. It was sung in a language the girl had never heard before, but even without understanding the words, she could feel the kindness in it. The park seemed to change around them as she sang, and by the time the final verse had left the reyvateil's lips, what had been a park encased in coldness was colorful and vibrant. Flowers sprouted as the child's sorrow left her heart, and the air was pleasantly toasty without being uncomfortably warm. It was after she had stopped singing that she addressed the girl.]

Your parents are working hard because they care about you. They won't always be there, but when they are not, there is a good reason for it. They would probably be worrying about you if they knew you were out here alone. You should head home right away so that when they get back, you can be there to greet them. I'm sure they'll be happy to see you.

[As the girl headed home with her newfound smile on her face, Shurelia couldn't help but remember her own family. She knew well how that girl had felt, she'd struggled with the same feelings once and even though centuries had past, she'd never forgotten.]
